Masoor dal tadka

Dal tadka is one of the most popular recipe served in Indian restaurants. Basically dal tadka is cooked lentils which are tempered with oil or ghee , fried spices and herbs. In this post i am going to share the recipe of dal tadka which tastes like restaurant dish , can be cooked for any occasion.



Serves : 4

Ingredients:

  • Masoor dal-1 cup
  • Cooking Oil-2 tbsp
  • Ghee(clarified butter)-2 tbsp
  • A pinch of hing(asafetida)
  • Bayleaf(tejpatta)-1
  • Dry red chilly-2
  • Cumin(jeera)-1/4 tsp
  • Green chillies chopped-2
  • Garlic grated -1 1/2  tbsp
  • Ginger grated-1 tbsp
  • 1/2 medium size red onion chopped finely
  • 1/4 tomato chopped finely
  • 1  tsp cumin(jeera powder)
  • 1 1/4  tsp coriander(dhania) powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder(to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • A pinch of kasoori methi
  • Salt(to taste)
  • Chopped cilantro (for garnishing)
 Process:

  • Wash the dal and put it in pressure cooker , add 1 tsp oil , 1/2 tsp salt , 2 cups of water and  pressure cook it for 2 to 3 whistle. Turn off the stove and keep it aside, don't overcook the dal.
 





  • Prepare other ingredients ginger and garlic grated, green chillies chopped, onion chopped and tomato chopped for tadka
 

  • Heat the pan, and add 2 tbsp oil 
 

  • Add 1 bayleaf (tejpatta) and 2 dry red chilly and stir 
 

  • Add a pinch of hing and 1/4 tsp cumin and stir
 


  • Add garlic and stir till garlic are light brown
 

  • Add ginger and green chillies and stir 
 

  • Add onion and stir till onion are brown 
 

  • Add cumin powder, coriander powder, salt( to taste), red chilli powder and tomatoes and mix well on medium heat
 


  • Add 1/2 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder and mix well on medium heat
 

  • Add cooked dal and add water and mix well , let it cook for 5 min  till water starts to boil
 


  • Add 2 tbsp ghee, 1/2 tsp garam masala powder, a pinch of kasoori methi and mix well and turn off the stove
 

  • Its ready to serve , serve hot with rice and chapati
